The Carolina Panthers are adding another running back to their backfield.

The team’s RB corps is already stacked, with Jonathan Brooks, Chuba Hubbard, Miles Sanders, and Raheem Blackshear on the roster.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Panthers are signing Rashaad Penny in a move that would reunite the first-round pick with head coach Dave Canales.

The signing is expected to be completed after the team’s rookie minicamp.

“Source: Running back Rashaad Penny plans to sign with the #Panthers,” Fowler reported on Monday morning. “Former first-round pick reunites with head coach Dave Canales from their Seattle days. Signing likely happening after rookie minicamp.”

Penny spent last season with the Philadelphia Eagles, making just three appearances. He rushed 11 times for 33 yards.

Rashaad Penny Would Give The Panthers Extra Flexibility

Rashaad Penny is familiar with Canales’ system, with the two having worked together in Seattle. The new HC was the passing game coordinator for the Seahawks when the player had his best season with the team in 2021, rushing 119 times for 749 yards. New Panthers offensive coordinator Brad Idzik was also an offensive assistant in Seattle then.

Meanwhile, Brooks is coming off a torn ACL suffered last season at Texas. He expects to be medically cleared in time for training camp, but Penny’s arrival should make his integration easier.

The move also gives the Carolina Panthers flexibility where it pertains to a potential trade for Sanders. The former Penn State star lost the starting job to Hubbard last season, so his future isn’t all that clear, although GM Dan Morgan said he sees a “big role” for him next season.
