It sounds like the Kansas City Chiefs will be without one of their key superstar players on offense for Super Bowl 58 against the San Francisco 49ers.

Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced that star guard Joe Thuney is unlikely to play in Super Bowl 58 due to his pectoral injury. Thuney also missed the AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens recovering from the injury he suffered in the Divisional Round against the Buffalo Bills.

 

Thuney’s likely absence is a big blow for the Chiefs, who have one of the best offensive line units in football. In last year’s Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles, Thuney and company didn’t allow a single sack to a defense that recorded 70 sacks during the regular season.

The Chiefs’ o-line allowed just two sacks through their first three postseason games, and both of them came in the AFC title game against the Ravens.

According to Pro Football Focus, Thuney only allowed two sacks on 1,096 offensive snaps during the regular season. Thuney, who’s looking to win his fourth Super Bowl ring, also won championships with the New England Patriots in the 2016 and 2018 seasons.

With a victory over the 49ers, the Chiefs will become the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls since the Patriots, who took home consecutive titles in the 2003 and ’04 seasons.
