The Dallas Cowboys made a roster cut this Wednesday, releasing former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Martavis Bryant.
Bryant only returned to the NFL last season after spending several years out, having been suspended indefinitely by commissioner Roger Goodell.
The Steelers took the WR in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He caught 126 passes for 1,917 yards and 17 touchdowns in three seasons before a trade to the Oakland Raiders ahead of the 2018 campaign. He only played in eight games before he was suspended.
Bryant joined the Dallas Cowboys practice squad last November and was released in January before he was re-signed to a contract for the upcoming 2024 season. However, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Dallas has decided to cut him again following the addition of sixth-round draft pick Ryan Flournoy and a meeting with free agent wide receiver Zay Jones.
Pelissero also noted that several teams are interested in the wideout’s services.
The Steelers might have been one of those teams as they were keen on signing a WR to pair with George Pickens, but they’ve just agreed to a one-year deal with former Atlanta Falcons receiver Scotty Miller.
Martavis Bryant Hasn’t played In The NFL Since The 2018 Season
Bryant hasn’t played in the NFL since 2018, when he was suspended indefinitely after failing multiple drug tests, which showed he used marijuana.
He applied for reinstatement in 2019 but spent four years before he was allowed back into the league, even after the NFL changed the rules that got him suspended in the first place.
Bryant kept busy while on hiatus from the league, as he had stints in the CFL with the Toronto Argonauts, Edmonton Elks, and at least two indoor football teams. He played with the Vegas Vipers in the XFL last year.
