The San Francisco 49ers have parted ways with one of their coaches.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, Kyle Shanahan has revealed having fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.

“49ers coach Kyle Shanahan announces on a conference call that he has fired DC Steve Wilks,” Rapport tweeted on Wednesday afternoon.

“It just ended up being not the right fit,” Shanahan was quoted as saying.

This comes just one day after the head coach indicated that all of the coaches would be returning while defending the job Wilks did over the course of the season.

“I haven’t talked to anybody yet, so, yeah, I expect all our coaches to be back,” he said after being quizzed on Wilks’ future, per David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com.

“I thought they’re one of the reasons that we got this far. I thought they did a number of good things. They did a lot of good things in that game [Super Bowl LVIII], too. Just like our whole team. Our team did a bunch of good things this year but came up short in the last game.”
It appears things have changed just a day later as Wilks is out of a job one year after replacing DeMeco Ryans as the Niners DC.
