He met his ex wife Charley on the set of Emmerdale and the pair started dating in 2007.

But in November 2023 she released a statement confirming that they had gone their separate ways after five years of marriage.

However, the former soap sweethearts still have three children in common – Buster, 13, Bowie, eight, and Ace, four.

While appearing on Loose Women on Monday, Matthew told show host Charlene White what it has been like for them raising kids together after the divorce.

“I think we are still finding our way,” he admitted. “I mean the good thing is me and Charley are best mates and that is fantastic.”

He continued: “It is still new to us at the moment but we are still kind of finding our feet, and finding a way to do it well. And I think we are.”

Panelist Kéllé Bryan shared her support for him, responding: “Look, you are co-parenting and that is what it is all about.”

Matthew left Emmerdale in a shock move last year.

He played one of the longest-running characters on the Dales before he decided it was time to move on.

An insider told The Sun that Matthew quit the soap as he was “bored” with his character’s plotlines.

At the time a TV source said: “Matthew has had an amazing time on the soap, but feels ready for a change.

“He hasn’t been getting any gritty storylines recently so wants to see what else is out there.

“He’s a fan favourite so will get a lot of support in whatever he decides to do next.

“He’s very excited about the opportunities available.

“He’s only just announced he is leaving so scriptwriters are working out his on-screen exit. It’s possible David could be killed off.”
