The Duchess of Sussex’s plans for being “a superstar” in the royal family didn’t go to plan, with a royal expert pointing out that “the Royal Family was the wrong vehicle for her ambitions”


Meghan Markle, Duchess of SussexMeghan Markle’s poor experience in the royal family is down to her ambitions ‘not aligning’ and ‘wanting to be the top dog’, according to an expert.

The Duchess of Sussex stepped down from the royal family alongside husband Prince Harry in 2020, and has made explosive and controversial comments ever since about her experience in the royal family. However, it’s been highlighted by a former royal correspondent that the former Suits actress might have struggled in the royal family after originally wanting to be seen as the star.

Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond said: “I have always held the view that Meghan failed to understand that she would never be the top dog in the Royal Family … or even the deputy top dog.” She added: “There’s nothing wrong with seeking the limelight. It’s just that the Royal Family was the wrong vehicle for her ambitions.”

Speaking to OK! Bond also pointed out that while many say Meghan would like to be seen as “a superstar”, she seems to prefer being “low-key” with her life in Montecito, California, since stepping away from royal duties.

The comments come as Meghan and Harry are currently working on more projects with Netflix. In 2020, the couple signed a reported $100million (£78.6million) deal with Netflix, which is due to expire next year in 2025. Since they signed with the streaming platform, Harry and Meghan have worked on several projects including their six-part docuseries, which featured many controversial comments about the royal family and their experience as royals.

Now Harry is working on a documentary series looking at the sport of polo with Meghan focusing on a lifestyle and cookery show, which is thought to tie into her new American Riviera Orchard brand. However it’s thought that interest in the former royals might be waning, as royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told The Mirror : “Yet since their $100 million contract with Netflix began, they have done hardly anything for it. It runs out next year and Netflix are no longer producing the series of The Crown, as they previously were. They might therefore have less interest in the Sussexes.”

He added: “If they lost this contract, with Archewell, their business and charitable foundation, having so few donors, they might well be in financial trouble. Since their exposes of royal life has made megabucks, but little else has made money, the Royal Family better hope that this unpredictable and ruthlessly ambitious couple stays with Netflix.”
