Derrick Rose revealed that his mother used to have only $20 to $50 dollars every two weeks to raise her four children.
Derrick Rose didn’t grow up in the lap of luxury, once revealing that his mother would raise him and his three siblings while having only $20 to $50 in her pocket to spend on their living expenses for two weeks.
“I knew at a young age that my living conditions was f***ed up. [My mom] put all the money on the table and she only had $20 to $50 after she paid all her rent to spend for two weeks with four kids. I went to the bathroom and was like, ‘How you gonna spend that on us for two weeks?’ I gotta change that. I gotta change something, and that’s what I did.”
Rose revealed that he found a way to hoop even with hardship, playing on outside courts and even shoveling snow to make space for his practice. The motivation to lift his family out of poverty is what drove him to work as hard as he did, and we can safely say he succeeded.
An emotional homecoming of sorts will take place next season as Rose plays for the Memphis Grizzlies and looks to return to form. Everyone knows Rose was born and bred in Chicago, but he spent his sole NCAA year with the University of Memphis. He’s well-remembered and respected in the city for his contributions and will look to be a mentor for Ja Morant.
Rose will beef up the Grizzlies’ point guard rotation which has changed over the summer. Backup guard Tyus Jones is gone, and Morant will miss the first 25 games of the season due to suspension. In the meantime, Rose and Marcus Smart will likely run the position.
Rose averaged 5.6 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.7 assists last season in limited minutes with the Knicks but will hope to provide on-court value for the Grizzlies in his 16th season.
