The Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Dallas Mavericks in dramatic fashion on Tuesday night.
The back and forth contest culminated with unlikely hero Max Strus hitting an insane buzzer-beating from beyond halfcourt to secure a 121-119 win for Cleveland.
The wild finish captured the attention of Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, who had an amusing exchange on social media.
Kelce, meanwhile, was born in Westlake, Ohio, less than 15 miles from downtown Cleveland, and is receiving a bobblehead night from the organisation along with brother Jason on March 5.
Mahomes, who is no stranger to pulling it out the bag late on, was stunned by Strus’ ridiculous game-winner and quote-posted a highlight of the shot while tagging Kelce.
He captioned it “ain’t no way” while adding three crying laughing emojis.
Kelce responded to his teammate’s message, writing, “Straight cash!!! Them boys got the juice right now!!”.
The tight end isn’t wrong – the Cavaliers are 7-3 in their past 10 games and have a 38-19 record, good enough for the No.2 seed out East.
Despite their good run, the Cavs found themselves in a dogfight on Tuesday night at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse and needed some late-game heroics to come away with the win.
The Mavs had a 10-point lead with just over four minutes left and looked destined to hold on.
Cleveland rallied though and took a three-point lead with 29.1 seconds left.
However, P.J. Washington looked to have won it for Dallas when he finished a layup with 2.6 seconds left to give the visitors a 119-118 lead.
But Strus had other ideas, and after inbounding the ball pulled up from well over halfcourt to sink one of the most insane buzzer-beaters in league history.
His shot came from 59 feet, making it the second-longest game-winning buzzer-beater during the 3-point era (since 1979-80).
The 27-year-old was already a huge factor in the Mavs’ come-from-behind victory.
Before his game-winner, he hit four three-pointers to go on his own personal 12–3 run which cut Dallas’ lead down to one with just over two minutes remaining.
In the end Strus finished with 21 points, all of which were three pointers as he shot 7-of-10 from beyond the arc.
