New details have emerged on the Dallas Cowboys’ plans with quarterback Dak Prescott as the 31-year-old heads into the final season of his contract.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones usually gets extensions with his star players done quickly. But interestingly, the Cowboys have yet to extend Dak Prescott, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and linebacker Micah Parsons. Lamb is in the final year of his rookie deal, while Parsons has two years left on his rookie pact.
Naturally, some fans and pundits can’t help but wonder if the Cowboys are unsure about keeping Prescott long-term. It is, after all, noteworthy that Jerry hasn’t extended No. 4 with mandatory minicamp inching closer.
But during a recent edition of “NFL Live”, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that Dallas remains committed to keeping Dak Prescott:
“They are all in on re-signing Dak Prescott. They just haven’t shown it yet. But I’m told behind the scenes, they’ve made clear they don’t want him to hit free agency in 2025. They want him to be the quarterback of the future.”
Fowler has heard that contract negotiations are “passive”, though he expects the Cowboys to speed up extension talks soon.

After playing the 2020 campaign under the franchise tag, Prescott signed a four-year contract extension in the 2021 offseason worth $160 million. He has followed that up by leading Dallas to three straight 12-win seasons, though America’s Team only has one victory to show for it.
Prescott had a career year in 2023, completing 69.5 percent of his pass attempts for 4,516 yards and 36 touchdowns against nine interceptions. However, Dallas’ promising season ended with a stunning blowout loss at the hands of the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card Round.
The Cowboys will open the 2024 season on Sept. 8 with a road game against the Cleveland Browns. That game will mark Tom Brady’s debut as an analyst for the “NFL on FOX” program.
Cowboys & Dak Prescott Should Finalize An Extension Soon
It is surprising that an extension hasn’t been reached yet, but there’s no reason to think that Prescott and the Cowboys are headed for a divorce.
Prescott has made it clear time and time again that this is where he wants to play. And if Jones is going to keep Mike McCarthy around as his head coach, of course he’ll be willing to pay his franchise QB.
