Russell Wilson wasted no time breaking his silence after news emerged that the Denver Broncos are planning to move on from the 35-year-old quarterback.

The Broncos announced on X/Twitter today that they’ll officially release Wilson from his contract when the new league year begins on Mar. 13. With the move, Denver will take on a massive $85 million charge in dead money.

Classy as always, Wilson posted a heartwarming message to Broncos Country following the news of his release. He ended the statement with, “God’s got me. I am excited for what’s next.”

In the 2022 offseason, the Broncos acquired Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks in what was supposed to be a franchise-changing move. The nine-time Pro Bowler subsequently signed a five-year extension worth $245 million before every playing a snap for them.

Wilson had a tough first year in the Mile High City, though much of the blame could be attributed to rookie head coach Nathaniel Hackett (fired after 15 games) and a woeful offensive line that allowed Wilson to take a league-high 55 sacks.

The future Hall of Famer had a strong bounce-back year under new head coach Sean Payton, completing 66.4 percent of his pass attempts for 3,070 yards and 26 touchdowns against just eight interceptions.

But the Broncos ultimately decided that it wasn’t good enough to give Wilson another year on the job. As such, he will hit the free agent market for the first time in his career.
