News of Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes’ split shocked many fans but came as no surprise to friends of the couple as their marriage had been on the rocks for two years.

Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes were at loggerheads for two years before their split.

The couple announced on Saturday, May 25, they had made the decision to go their separate ways after 14 years of marriage, causing a wave of reactions on social media. However, one source close to the former This Morning hosts has told The Sun Ruth and Eamonn “led separate lives, professionally and personally” for two years.

According to the insider, Ruth and Eamonn’s 2020 axe from This Morning, after presenting the morning program on Fridays and school holidays, severely deteriorated their union as their respective careers began to change, leaving them on different wavelengths.

“Eamonn and Ruth’s relationship changed when they left This Morning. They started moving in different directions in their careers and their priorities started to change”, the source told the publication.

Belfast native Eamonn was keen to return to his home city which caused further tensions between the pair and the issue even became their “bone of contention”, as the source added: “Eamonn was desperate to return to Belfast, which he thinks of as home, but Ruth would never move. It became a bone of contention.”

“As her ITV career continued, Eamonn went down another path and they became ships in the night. For the past two years they had led separate lives, professionally and personally.” Eamonn, who has encountered health issues within the last two years after a spinal surgery, spoke about his desire to return to Belfast in 2023.

The TV star, 64, made the revelation when asked where he thinks of as home: “well, it’s not Surrey. When people ask me what I’m doing at the weekend, I tell them I’m going home. Then my wife gets very irritated by this. She says, ‘This is your home. And I say, ‘No Ruth, this is where I work. This is where I have to be, but home.'”

After breaking the news they had separated, Ruth broke her silence to share a video of herself walking her dog Maggie in the sunshine this Sunday, before sharing another heart-warming snap of the pup. The presenter also made the decision to take a step back from her duties on the Loose Women panel, which she often anchors.

Eamonn, on the other hand, is expected back on GB News this Monday, May 27, and due to address his split from Ruth upon his comeback on screens.

“Eamonn is always frank on camera and knows it will be odd for him to discuss the day’s news without mentioning his split so he’ll say a few words”, a source said. “He is putting on a brave face and will be the true professional he always is. Focusing on work will be a welcome distraction.”
