Beginning to pick its pace and turn dark, episode 5 of X-Men ’97 brings the audiences to witness the destruction of the state at the hands of Sentinels. Taking a shocking and heartbreaking turn, fans are slammed with Magneto’s death, followed by Gambit’s. But that’s not all, fans tear up when X-Men ’97 uses a reference to Scarlet Witch’s gut-wrenching moment from Avengers: Infinity War and WandaVision.
Magneto and Gambit Lose Their Lives in X-Men ’97
After X-Men ’97 episode 4 ended with the story focused on Storm and Forge, the 5th episode picked back up with the other members of the team. This time focusing on Magneto, Gambit, and Rogue, the show began with the event where the state of Genosha finally became a part of the United Nations.
However, following the formal induction into the UN, the storyline began taking a dark turn, as Genosha faced an attack by an army of Sentinels. Soon Magneto is shown defending the state from the attack as he is shown holding back the giant Sentinel’s weapon. Eventually, Magneto’s barriers get breached by the Sentinel and an explosion occurs which seemingly implies that Magneto lost his life while fighting.

Fans were just starting to process this huge loss, when they were slammed with a threat looming over Gambit as he went head-on against the Mothership. Watching Rogue fly into a rage against the giant Sentinel, following Magneto’s death, Gambit charges the Sentinel himself, in an attempt to spare her life.

When Gambit was about to deliver the final blow, the Sentinel stabbed him with a metal protruding arm. Although Gambit uses his mutant abilities to supercharge the arm and kill the Sentinel with kinetic energy, he eventually loses his life. Rogue finds Gambit’s lifeless body and mutters “I can’t feel you” before the episode fades to black.
X-Men ’97’s Gut-Wrenching Reference to Scarlet Witch and Vision
Good gracious! Two major deaths weren’t enough for Marvel when they thought it was better to give a numbing blow to the audience with a reference to Scarlet Witch and Vision. Rogue uttering the heartbreaking words “I can’t feel you” for Gambit’s lifeless body in X-Men ’97 was a gut-wrenching parallel to the most distressing scene from WandaVision.
After establishing a romantic affair between Wanda Maximoff and Vision in Avengers: Infinity War, the film often showed them uttering the phrase “I can feel you”. However, the film ended with Wanda killing the love of her life to save humanity, which eventually turned into one of the most heartbreaking scenes from the 2018 movie.

Further, as the duo appeared in the MCU series WandaVision, Scarlet Witch was seen muttering the phrase “I can’t feel you” to Vision’s wrecked body. Turning it into a callback scene from Avengers: Infinity War, the WandaVision sequence became a tearjerker. Therefore using that very reference in X-Men ’97 became a little too much for fans.
